Lubber Grasshoppers. The eastern lubber grasshopper. I photographed these beautiful insects at a place called Jane's Scenic Drive at the north end of lake Harmon. June is the start of the photographic season for grasshoppers in the everglades as this is when they change color from the black to the colors you see here. Early morning and evening is the best time to photograph grasshoppers. These grasshoppers are about 2 to 3 inches in length but will grow up to 5 inches by late July and August. And by September they have mostly died off as their life span is about three months.

The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper. The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper is surely the most distinctive grasshopper species in the southeastern United States. It is well known both for its size and its unique coloration. The wings offer little help with mobility for they are rarely more than half the length of the abdomen. This species is incapable of flight and can jump only short distances. Mostly the lubber is quite clumsy and slow in movement and travels by walking and crawling feebly over the ground. It is not unusual for the grasshopper to fall off it's perch as it tries to move around, although good climbers they are very clumsy.
